Difference Between Magnetic Field & Magnetic Flux

The major difference between the magnetic field and the magnetic flux is that the magnetic field is the region in which moving charges and poles experience a force. whereas, the magnetic flux is the strength of magnetic lines produced by a magnet. We shall discuss the other minor differences in this post.

The amount of magnetizing force is the strength of magnetic field strength(H). The force is directly proportional to ;

Sources of Magnetic Field

Magnetic Field Current-Carrying Conductor

Moving charged particles creates a magnetic field. When current flows in a conductor, it produces a magnetic field around the conductor. The presence of a magnetic field can be checked by placing the magnetic needle at that point. The magnetic field generated due to the current-carrying conductor is given below

Thus a magnetic field due to current carrying conductor depends on;

  • Current flowing through conductor and distance from the conductor.

The magnetic field increase with an increase in the current. The magnetic field is proportional to the current flowing in the conductor.

  • Distance from the conductor

The magnetic field is inversely proportional to the distance from the current carry conductor.

Magnetic field due to permanent Magnet

The magnetic field associated with a permanent magnet can be seen by placing a sheet of paper over the magnet. And, randomly sprinkling iron filings on the paper. Each particle gets quickly magnetized and forms the north and south poles. In between the north and south poles, they form lines representing the magnetic fields.

Magnetic Flux

The total number of magnetic force lines produced by the magnet is magnetic flux.

The unit of flux is Weber. SI and CGS unit of the magnetic flux is Tesla and Maxwell respectively. The one Weber is equal to the 108 lines of forces or the Maxwell.

Key Differences Between Magnetic Field and Magnetic Flux

Let us summarize the key differences.

  1. The area around the magnet produce a magnetic field. In this area, the poles and the moving charges experiences a force of attraction or repulsion. The force depends on the strength of the magnetic field. The stronger the magnetic field, the stronger the force experienced by poles and moving charges. Whereas, the number of magnetic lines of force produced by the magnetic is the magnetic flux. The number of force line is more if the magnetic field is strong.
  2. The magnetic field depends on the magnetic strength and the direction of the moving charges. Whereas, the magnetic field depends on the field strength and the area around the poles.
  3. The SI unit of the magnetic field is Tesla. The SI unit of magnetic flux is Weber.


The magnetic flux generates a magnetic field. Thus, the magnetic flux and magnetic field both are interrelated.
